“The tiny thong I was calling a costume snapping during a show.”
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT KAYLA.
I am a performer, model, loud mouth who often drinks too much and has a good old laugh with it in the meantime. Most proudly I am Mumma, it's actually almost like I live a double life. I travel (or did prior to the current climate) around the world basically playing for a job, lots of fire, even more partying post show... and then I get to return to the quiet life at home.
YOU’RE ONE OF THE FUEL GIRLS, FOR ANYONE THAT DOESN'T KNOW WHO THEY ARE TELL THE WORLD :)
The fuel girls are in my mind the longest going fire performing group of women. It consist of super multi skilled empowering badass women who entertain from small scale posh private parties to giant arena shows. I think in some countries we are probably known for our partying capacity more than our actual skill set. Don't let that make you underestimate it though... we perform with fire, pyrotechnics, complex choreography and also are lucky enough to have a couple of the greatest Aerialists in the crew!
WHEN AND HOW DID YOU START WITH THE GIRLS?
I joined probably about 6 years ago... maybe more, it feels like I've always been part of it though the brand has been in existence for much longer. It's evolved even in my time with all the girls bringing more and more to the table in terms of performance art, some of the girls are crazy talented. Each year we try and beat the last.
HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A PERFORMER?
I dropped out of my a-levels at school because I knew it wasn't what I wanted from life. So I went to college to do musical theatre instead. I think I worked at a clothing store until I was 17 and other than that I've always performed. I've a degree in dance performance which I got whilst working as a gogo dancer/ festival fire performer.
IN YOUR OPINION WHATS YOUR BEST SHOW TO PERFORM AT?
As a freelancer and being self employed I've been very lucky to work with some incredible brands and companies! I went on tour with the Suicide girls a few times which meant living out in LA for rehearsals and then travelling the states and also Canada on a tour bus with some of the coolest people I have ever met. I also have to mention masters of dirt which is a freestyle show the fuel girls have worked with for over a decade. The big arenas, the outrageous tricks the Fmx & Bmx riders pull around us are insane and it's an amazing buzz all round
IT’S OBVIOUSLY DANGEROUS WHAT YOU DO HAS THERE EVER BEEN A NIGHTMARE ON STAGE WHILE PERFORMING?
I think if any fire performer told you they had never had some sort of 'issue' or 'accident' whilst performing they would be lying. Fire has sometimes a mind of its own so you always need to be able to predict what it's going to do in certain environments. Sometimes the wind direction you rehearsed in all afternoon for that big outdoor event changes the second before your show, which can be an issue and then some.
My personal nightmares however, top three would probably be:
Setting my fake (and consequently real) eyelashes on fire during a show.
The tiny thong I was calling a costume snapping, also during a show.
Breaking a toe in a dance number and having to continue anyway.
WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING TO DEAL WITH IN THE INDUSTRY?
Yourself. The industry can be cut throat, soul destroying, ruthless... There can be bitchiness, poor organisation, long days of hard work, too much sitting around waiting for your rehearsal time, painfully early flights, big ego clashes; all these things and more can often send you into a negative spiral and have you question your own capability/place within the industry. If you're in a good mindset, all the above become bearable and it's a great buzz to be part of.
I’M SURE IT’S A VERY DEMANDING JOB AND YOUR ALWAYS OUT ON THE ROAD, HOW LONG DO YOU SEE YOURSELF DOING THIS TYPE OF WORK? DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER ASPIRATIONS YOU WOULD LOVE TO FULFIL?
I would like to continue to perform as long as people will book me... sure I could come up with an act in my 90s if people wanted to pay me to perform it! I try and keep on top of my trade by keeping in shape and a lot of that comes from yoga for me... when/if a time comes where I can't find work on a stage somewhere or in front of a camera then I'll be training to teach yoga myself.
DO YOUR TATTOOS REPRESENT ANYTHING? DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO GET MORE?
Oh, I'm at the point where I can't remember half the tattoos I have let alone the reasons I got them. One of my sleeves is made up of random bits that meant something at the time. The ones that truly have meaning I remember, but sure, I also have Bambi and Thumper staring at each other on my forearms so.... Haha, I mean, I want a few cover ups, a few reworks and yes I'm sure I'll want more once that's done.
WHAT WHERE YOUR LAST 3 THINGS ON YOUR SEARCH ENGINE :)?
Gosh, Does anyone answer this question truthfully :o Feeling quite relieved at the answers if I'm honest:
Digger toys (my son's turning 3 this month)
Pub quiz online (good old lockdown life)
Trump updates (shocking... and I can't believe I'm ending an interview with that)
